Love-4-Layla

I was very fortunate recently to be given the opportunity to help with a fundraiser.

The cousin of my co-worker/good friend Nancy had a baby named Layla a little over a year ago who was born in a rare disorder called Apert Syndrome.  Her little head was shaped like a cloverleaf at birth due to the growth lines in her skull being fused prematurely.

She had her first surgery at 22 days old to relieve the pressure on her brain and to reform her skull.  This little cutie has had 19 surgeries so far in her little life and has many, many more.

Nancy and her son Austin decided to throw a fundraiser for Layla's family to help with medical bills and living expenses since Layla's mom quit her job to give Layla the care the she needs.  That's where I got to help.  :)

I designed a logo for them which I then had printed on t-shirts at a discount that they re-sold to help raise money for the fundraiser itself.  I was told that Layla's room was decorated with bumble bees so that seemed to be the perfect image to use for her.

Here is everyone wearing their t-shirts.

I used one of the logos to make a pillow for the little guest of honor using some cute flannel I found with bees on it.  Her mom said she kept petting it because it was so soft. :)

The fundraiser was a BBQ at the home of Nancy's parents where they had music, games for the kids and raffles.  They also sold buttons that I made with the logo (no pic... I'm sorry :( ) and t-shirts that had been donated by a local printer using my design.  They also got a lot of local businesses to donate gift certificates and items for the raffle.  My guys and I purchased 22 tickets total and won 2 gift certificates for a free appetizer at Longhorn Steakhouse and $5 off at Red Lobster.  :)

They were able to raise over $7,000 to help out and I am so happy that I got to be a part of that for this wonderful girl and her family.

  1. What a great cause! I love the logo you made & I'm glad that Layla has great parents to give her the love & care she needs. I hope her surgeries keep going well! :)

Got something to say? Then I wanna hear it! But if it's mean or an ad that doesn't fit with my blog theme, it may not stay for long. Just sayin'. :) And sorry about the word verification. I'm just tired of spambots invading my happy place. :P

My Dinner Guest

I had a wonderful guest for dinner last night. His name was Henry and he was delicious! (*evil grin*) I had no idea that sculpting with meat could actually be fun! I started with 5 pounds of ground beef mixed with 4 cups of diced onion, 10 oz roasted garlic bread crumbs, 4 eggs, 1/4 cup tomato sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. I put a roasted onion inside his cranium as filler/a brain and used raw onion for his eyes and teeth. I actually kind of grossed myself out when I covered him with tomato sauce. LOL Next was a nice layer of provolone cheese slices. I ended up putting a few toothpicks in the side pieces before cooking to help hold the cheese in place over the tomato sauce. He was roasted at 350-degrees for 100 minutes. I had to hack off his chin for my piece. I *had* to.... I'm not sure what that says about me but yeah. I had to. :) I did learn a couple of things for when I make this in August. ** I need to pack the meat a lot tighter and mince the onion inste...

Baby balls

Okay, that post title makes me giggle.  Titling posts is even harder for me than writing them but you'll see how I came to that one in just a bit. :) First, the baby part.  I was asked to design the invitations for a Halloween baby shower!  (Okay, I offered when I heard about it but they took me up on the offer so that's almost the same! *grin*)  The theme of the shower is Boo Crew so I took inspiration from the invite that they found where they loved the wording of but not the design... Image source ...and designed something that fits with the Boo Crew theme without outright copying it. :) They also found this idea (which I am totally stealing if a miracle baby ever happens): Image source So, of course, I made theirs to match the invite: :) Now for the balls.  LOL With my tummy issue, any time I eat anything with chocolate in it, my tummy hurts.  A lot.  Thankfully, I am not one of those girls that HAS to have chocolate eve...

(*swoon*)

I just got my first order from J and O Fabric and I am in looooooove! And, I happily blame Psycho Sue of Sew Misunderstood . :) I got the last 1-3/8 yards of this. Jealous? :) I'm not sure what I am going to do with it but I am envisioning either a ruffle at the bottom of a long skirt ( like I did here ) or the bodice of a cute top. I got 3 yards of this fun fabric. Again, not entirely sure what will become of this but I fell in love with it when I saw it. :) I know this is totally not the type of thing I would typically wear but I couldn't pass it up! I have a couple of black tanks that I could use to make baby doll style shirts and this would be fun for the bottom of that. I got just 1 yard of this. I can't wait! (*wiggles excitedly*)
